DISCOVER OUR RURAL AND REGIONAL HEARTLANDS

The communities that participate in The Rural Experience may be diverse but they all face some of the same challenges in accessing skills, services, resources and investment, as well as natural challenges that can vary from drought to cyclone to flood and back again.

They are also places with strong community spirit and a lifestyle that is more relaxed than the city. Rents and house prices are lower and you don’t have to worry about traffic congestion and parking problems!

At present, The Rural Experience is held in Longreach and Charleville but watch this space for other host communities in future.

About Longreach

Longreach is a vibrant regional centre about 700 kilometres west of Rockhampton. The region’s population of about 3,700 people lives in an area of over 40,000 square kilometres.

Longreach was chosen as the first host community for The Rural Experience because it is an agricultural, retail, tourism and administrative centre, home to many Queensland government department offices, health services, community service organisations, and educational institutions including Longreach School of Distance Education and Queensland Agricultural Training College’s Longreach Campus. There are also nationally-recognised tourist attractions including the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame, Qantas Founders Museum and Outback Pioneers.

While recent years of drought have affected the cattle and sheep industries in the region, a number of locals have diversified their income by developing award-winning tourism operations, internet-based businesses and other innovative projects.

About Charleville

Charleville is a spirited regional centre about 750 kilometres west of Brisbane. The region’s population of about 4,300 people lives in an area of over 40,000 square kilometres.

Charleville is an agricultural, retail, tourism and administrative centre in Western Queensland, home to many Queensland government department offices, health services, including a Royal Flying Doctor Service base, community service organisations, and educational institutions including Charleville School of Distance Education.

There are also nationally-recognised tourist attractions including the Charleville Cosmos Centre and Observatory and Charleville Bilby Experience.
